The Liberum - an old Latin term for ‘the free’ - advocates a free marketplace of ideas and thoughts. Freedom of speech and the fundamental right to seek and publish information through an independent press is under attack now more than ever.
The Liberum opposes this.
The right to express opinions without government restraint is a democratic ideal that dates back to ancient Greece. A large part of the assault on this fundamental right has come from an unexpected source. Elected leaders in many democracies, who should be press freedom’s staunchest defenders, have explicitly tried to silence critical media voices and strengthen outlets with favorable coverage.
A trend linked to a global decline in democracy itself: The erosion of press freedom is both a symptom of and a contributor to the breakdown of other democratic institutions and principles, making it especially alarming.
Born in 2015 as The Levant News, in 2022, The Liberum grew into a platform of uncensored ideas and stories that do not necessarily make it to mainstream media. A platform with a new look and feel unapologetic in every essence.
