Treason in US airforce as officer accused on insider explosion in Syria

The Air Force has charged one of its own with carrying out an insider attack on a military base in Syria that injured four personnel in April.

The suspect, Tech. Sgt. David D. Dezwaan Jr., is accused of setting off explosives that rocked the base dubbed Green Village. He faces multiple charges, including dereliction of duty, aggravated assault, destroying military property and reckless endangerment.

Dezwaan also is charged with accessing a government computer with an unauthorized purpose and taking classified information.

The service member has been in custody stateside since June, when the military said it was probing the blasts. The Pentagon on June 7 concluded the attack was a “deliberate placement of explosive charges” in an ammunition holding area and shower facility.

Originally, officials said the incident was caused by artillery or another form of indirect fire.

A preliminary hearing for Dezwaan is set for Aug. 23 at Hill Air Force Base in Utah, the Air Force said Thursday.

The personnel wounded in the attack suffered minor injuries, including “possible traumatic brain injuries,” US officials said at the time.
